Product: A document library and information site for the Department of Early Education and Care in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
Details: I started by working with the Commissioner and her staff to learn about the people they serve. That led to a complete set of personas: family members, providers, teachers, policy makers and community leaders.
Working with subject-matter experts at the Department and at the United Way of Massachusetts Bay, we did a content inventory. I coordinated a team that reviewed hundreds of documents to develop a new content strategy. While the technology was predefined by the Commonwealth's website design, we created a new information architecture for the site. We then did a usability study to verify the design.
Outcome: The result was an improved UI, easier ways for site visitors to find documents, and recommendations about using the content management system (CMS) to maintain the site. The staff members that I worked with developed a new way of looking at their site and its users.
